Resetting Expectations

1/31/2018

I think we all can agree that there were some frustrations on Tuesday. I believe many of these issues stemmed from the login problems Blizzard was having, making people feel unprepared mentally and/or emotionally for the raid. Going forward, if we aren’t sure about stability an hour before raid, we will call it off.

There are some other points that I want to bring up as well. The first being alts. Alts are not an issue for farm nights, especially if they offer utility on certain encounters, or you are looking to switch because you have begun to hate your main. It is perfectly okay to test the waters and see if this alt is a right fit for you. If you opt to make this your main, then you can formally announce that and we will shift over your EP. This can only occur once per month unless there is a dire circumstance where the Raid Leader asks you to swap.

In order to play on an alt:
  • You need to have a main specified and in the guild
    • This helps us with loot and the expectation of that loot is you only get what is left over. Your EP on your main means nothing on your alt, as this doesn’t help the raid as much as it helps yourself
  • It benefits the raid more than having the main, and you are performing at a similar level
    • Parsing similarly is not necessarily playing at the same level
      • Raw damage output, healing or survivability are what is needed on progression fights
      • If you are doing 1.5m damage per second on your main, but only 1m on your alt, you are not performing at the level you need to and are hurting 14 other players progression
      • We have a minimum performance for the raid, but as we get to progression fights, this minimum moves up
        • Currently the minimum for lower bosses is around 1m while the end bosses for Argus is more like 1.5-2m
      • If you are able to vastly outperform an alt for progression encounters, you are expected to bring that character
      • The Raid Leader ultimately decided if an individual is able to attend a progression night based on how they are performing and if they are improving; as long as they aren’t a hindrance to the raid

The second thing that I want to discuss here is parsing. Parsing high is a great feeling and there are things you can pull from that data. At times, it means that you performed your rotation exceptionally well, were able to put out a good amount of damage and didn’t die. Other times, it could mean that you are ignoring mechanics to make yourself look better. There are many times where I could swap to dps gear and parse well, but that would cause a burden to our healers that is unacceptable for progression.

To that effect:
  • Whether it is dps, tanking or healing, being able to dps/survive/heal through a mechanic is more important than personal epeen points
  • This is a team effort, not a solo game. If you feel that parsing is the #1 reason for raiding and your parses are negatively impacting the raid, you are welcome to go do LFR

House of Zug is founded on principles that have created an awesome community. I have never seen a community like this before. The second that we put ourselves ahead of others is the moment we begin to lose our identity. Placing people on ignore is never an appropriate response, even if you aren’t the biggest fan of someone. Try to be constructive when you are seeing people not perform at their best, rather than ignoring the issue or being overly critical. It is easier to point a finger than to lift someone up.
